Sneak Peek

I’m headed off in the AM to Montana for a family wedding, but I’ve got a few people waiting for a sneak peek from this session, so gotta put these cuties up.

A friend of mine was in town with her 3 year old and 10 month old an their 3 year old cousin. I usually try to squeeze in a session for them whenever they’re in town. Brooke (now 3 years old) was my very first newborn I ever shot!

She’s a bit more grown up now, and has a little bit of Attitude!

Funny thing is I have 3 or 4 pics of her doing this… She reminds me of her mom :D

I did get some sweet ones of her though.

edwards-32

Then we had little Miss Audrey, also 3 years old. But I think she looks way too old in this shot.

And the little man, Trey

We tried to get a “nice” shot of all 3 of them together, but most of them looked something like this:

But we did manage to get at least one for grandma.

It was so fun to see the girls again and meet Trey! They’ve been clients of mine since the beginning and I’m so thankful that they let me practice on their kids when I wasn’t all that good. :D

I’ll have to post some pics from their first sessions when I get back, amazing to see how they’ve grown!

Sometimes you just wanna say….

Well WTD said it better than I could:

If you haven’t checked WTD out.. You gotta go.. Hilarious stuff.

Randomness at it’s finest….Phaunt Life

I’ve been extremely busy these last few weeks, so haven’t posted much. Sam is gone on his annual 2 week a year USMC training, so the girls and I are having a good time hanging out. I leave on Friday to go to Montana for a family wedding, so have a bunch to get ready for.

As usual, my obsessive side has been forcing me to do more painting. I finished this one for Kim Townsend of Simply Splash a few days ago:

A few Detail Shots:

I’m working on a few more, will post when I’m done.

I also got to go to the park tonite with the girls right at the perfect time for the light, and get some shots. Using my trusty 50mm and the kit lens on a few.

Warning.. PICTURE OVERLOAD….

Kate was in top form today, as she is currently in the “I’m not going to listen to you and will do whatever the heck I want to” stage. This included throwing sand, then laughing maniacally about it. But it did allow me to get some good laughing pics of her.

Yes, it’s very funny to do things Mom says NO to..

park-27

Lilly helped a bit.. I haven’t been able to get Kate to stand still for a picture with Lilly in it (without Kate crying and smacking Lilly in the head) for quite awhile now, so I was happy that they’re at least in the same vicinity for these shots.

Lilly informed me that she was making her heart castle for the leaf she found, it’s very serious work…

And it’s finished!

park-46

Oh yes, always fun to throw more sand!

They went down the slide, Kate LOVED it.

Just before we left.. trying to get some silhouettes, but the playground equipment wasn’t cooperating.. Great colors though.

Extremely quick processing on these (Just ran them thru Lightroom using the Phaunt Presets), so they’re a bit naked, but I know if I don’t post them I’ll forget about it, so I wanted to put it up.

What I’m up to lately… Photoshop Painting!

Anyone who knows me knows that I’m always working on some “new” project. On top of all the other stuff I’m doing lately, I’ve become obsessed with painting in Photoshop.

Painting in PS actually involves using the smudge brush (looks like a little poking finger), using various opacities/strengths and brushes. It’s a learning process for sure, but not as hard as you would think. I’m slowly getting the hang of it, lots of practice.

I started off by getting Brad Buttry’s Virtual Oil DVD and watching most of that (I have a very short attention span so didn’t make it thru the end of it).

From there I’ve been looking on the net and practicing practicing practicing! Having a great time! I may eventually offer them to photography clients, we’ll see. But for now I’m just having fun. Here’s a few that I’ve got done so far.. No making fun of me, remember I’m still learning! :D

This is Avery, from a session last Fall…

This photo is from the talented Jenica Lemmons, her daughter, Keely.

This one is Anyssa, Christina Hamre’s adorable Daughter.

This is from a session last Fall as well..

And last but not least.. one of my old favorite photos that is almost 2 years old now. I had just gotten a new backdrop, knew nothing about studio lighting, but it’s still one of my favorite shots of Lilly.

And some detail on her face:

So that’s waht I’m up to lately! Sam is gone for 2 weeks (annual training USMC) so me and the girls are going it alone. Hopefully we don’t go insane! :)

Check these Presets out!!

The cool thing about knowing people in the photographer land is that I get to see some of the coolest new products before they’re even released! I got to play with Christie Lacy’s presets for ACR and Lightroom, and they’re awesome! Very Versatile and great variety!

I did an interview with Christie a few months ago and you all got to see her great photography, but now You can go check out her presets on her new Preset blog/shop:

HERE

She is JUST opening up shop to sell these, and at that price you’re getting a steal, that’s less than $1 per preset! I processed some photos with them took me less than 10 min to do all of them, just applied the presets and resized/sharpened and Voila!

Christie has done a great job on these, you won’t be disappointed!

She’s also going to be running a contest on her blog, go leave her a comment and you could win a free set of presets!! Better hurry!! Tell her Kylie Sent ya :)

phaunt life: 3 AM posting…..

Well it’s about 3 am here, and I’m posting to the blog. Why? Because I think we’ve got a case of the sickies! Not me, but the girls. Who are now snuggled up on the beanbag watching the Jetsons. They were asleep, but Lilly woke up and cried, so woke Kate up, and now we’re all up, lovely!

So what better than to post to the blog? Late night rambling is always fun, especially when I don’t have my contacts in and am not quite sure if I’m making heinous spelling errors or not.

Thought I’d share a bit of what I’ve got laying on my desktop (computer desktop, not my desk desktop, which is covered with Dr. Pepper Cans and a few magazines).

First up we have:

kybabyafterweb

awwwwwwww Thats me!!! Wasn’t I cute? I’m scanning old photos to keep them on a disc, just did this one.. I think I was about 6 months old here?

And who’s this hottie?

momfixafter

That’s my mom, she said probably back in the late 70s? Love the outfit huh? Think we look alike?

Lets see what else we have going on the desktop….

av

An elephant that Lilly drew me! Isn’t she good? Only 5 years old!!

That’s about it for show and tell. I think I may go watch Yogi Bear with the girls.. he’s smmmmmmmarter than the average Bear!!

Hope you guys are sleeping well. Hah!

phaunterview- Kari Coon of Little Monsters Photography!

You’re in Luck! You get to start off the week with an awesome interview with Kari!!

bio

Name: Kari Coon aka Mrs Little Monsters
Location: Genesee Township, MI (Blink and you’ve missed it)

How did you get into Photography?

I have always loved it, starting when I was a kid. I always wanted to be either a Las Vegas showgirl or a photographer. You kind of have to be hot and 6 feet tall to be a showgirl so I chose Plan B.

How would you describe your Style in 3 words:

Easy, breezy, beautiful……I always wanted to say that. I would say fun, happy, and bouncy. I try to get one jumping shot at every session.

Your favorite Subject to Photograph:

Kids, especially babies 6 months to 11 months. I also love love love tweens. I love their angst (’I hate you all’ is my tween’s battle cry), their lightning quick texting created ambidexterity and their unfailing love for all things Zac Gefron.

077

When you need to get inspired what do you do?

I watch movies. I look at the scenes like stills and I try to take inspiration from the sets, costumes and even the plot. This works well if I watch something like Splendor in the Grass, not so much for something like Harold and Kumar go to White Castle.

Favorite Website(s) to waste time on:

MySpace and ILP

Favorite Photoshop Tool or tip:

Using the arrows to nudge the layer….love that. I used to get so frustrated trying to line things up. No more.

Do you think you’re just a teeny bit cooler than most people because you have some awesome illustrated friends? (Admit it, you know you do)

Absolutely.

What’s on your photo equipment wish list?

I really want a new camera but I am currently debt free and intending to ride my Canon 30D until the legs fall off. If I win the lottery…..a Nikon D3. If a long lost relative kicks the bucket and I just get a few bucks..a Canon 40D.

063

How do you keep your photography fresh and not feel like you are doing the same shots, different kids?

I try to treat every kid like they are the first ones I have ever taken to that location or put on that drop. The only way to do that is to get to know them a bit. I always start out just talking or coloring. Eventually they begin to like me a little and want to work with me-except one child he really did not like me at all-I have a feeling his parents were audited and the IRS agent looked like me–and then I just let them be kids. I play Joe Scruggs music, that is a perfect icebreaker.

What made you choose the name Little monsters? (I love it by the way)

I have been a parent for 10 years and since my first child, HB was born I called her my little monster. I think I may have used that more than her own name. Then my son was born and I discovered what a little monster really was. :) So it was fitting for me and my crazy family.

Are you related to Marnee or Jeff? I am in Michigan and years ago worked with them (non-photography stuff). Anyway - I know they were in Grand Blanc, Flint area.

Nope, not as far as I know. My husband’s family is pretty ginormous though and there is a good chance they may have been involved in the creation of either Jeff or Marnee.

021

What would you say is your greatest asset??

I would love to say my hotness. LOL I would have to say my sense of humor or the fact that I can become invisible…… when I go out with my much hotter and younger sister.

Can I borrow your “Top Things You Need to Know About Me” idea? Just the idea. It’s just the coolest about me page I’ve ever seen!

Heck yeah, I stole it from David Letterman.

Can you tell us more about your “rumble with a ferret”?

My sister is Jack Hanna’s love child and always has a menagerie of creatures at her home, so one day I stopped in for a visit and attempted to feed her ferret aka wolverine a treat. He mistook me for a pork chop and took a chunk out of my hand. I was bleeding really badly but rather than attend to my wound I chased the hideous beast around her kitchen for a full minute screaming things my mother doesn’t know I say. Round 1 Ferocious Ferret.

056

Do clients or random people ever comment on your apparent knack for humour, as it is so wonderfully displayed on your site?

Yes, some people think I am a bit loopy but every response has been positive.

Does George Clooney still run a close second for your passion? Has someone or something new taken his place?

I still heart George but I have been eyeing Gerard Butler. Yummy.

What prompted the active military, law and firefighters pricing on your site. Have you had many comments about the generosity you offer to those who keep us safe?

My Dad is a retired cop and my cousin was killed in Iraq in 2005, so this discount means a lot to me. The most important people in this country soldiers, cops, firemen, teachers, are not paid or treated as well as they should be. I recently added teachers to the mix, 2 of my sisters are teachers and work extremely hard so I want to honor them as well.

What is your “Best” purchase to date…and why do you feel it is your best?

Photocart. It has simplified my online ordering, my sales are up and it is indispensable to me.

If you could give one business tip to those who are JSO, what would it be?

Don’t rush the process of starting your business, get your plan in place and follow it. You will succeed if you make a sound business plan and follow it.

132

If you could give one technical to those who are JSO, what would it be?

I live by my histogram, learn how to read yours. It will make all the difference in your exposure. My post processing time is only 1 hour for a full session because my sooc shots are well exposed.

After an overwhelming day, what do you do to relax?

I like to sit on my kids trampoline and let them jump on me and around me. It makes me laugh every time, and laughter is a tension reducer for me. I also like to say “Serenity now” over and over again.

Where did you find the fun music? My kids are giggling listening to it right now

I was very blessed to get permission from Joe Scruggs (www.hellojoe.com) management company. He is an amazing artist and my kids love his music. I also recently procured a fun song from Paul Kelly. (www.walkingoliver.com)

If you were to sum up an ‘average’ day in the life of Kari in 5 words, what would those words be?

Prozac, Zoloft, Xanax, caffeine and sugar…………just kidding. I would say busy, happy, laughter, love and monsters.

What book have you read that you think has been the most helpful to your development as a photographer?

I have a Life hardcover The100 Photographs That Changed the World…that is an amazingly inspirational book.

206

Does she use a tripod or handheld, cause her photos are so sharp?

I never use a tripod because I am not fast enough adjusting it. I use prime lenses, specifically the 50mm 1.4 in studio and 85mm 1.8 outdoors.

My biggest issue is balancing family, shoots and editing. How do YOU do it???

This is a great question, I really keep my sessions to a reasonable number, I recently cut back to 2-3 per week because it was really interfering with my family. I only spend 4 hours average per session from start to finish, I create a proofing action (using Kylie’s Sunshine in my Hand as the first step LOL) and I batch the session. I do fully edit all my proofs but my style is for the most part pretty natural. I am also fluff-free, all of my information packets are digital, so that saves me a ton of time. The important thing is to balance you life, if I have to work for two hours, afterwards I watch a movie with my kids or spend time with my husband. No one complains if I have to work if they are also getting time with me.

THANK YOU Kari for taking the time out to answer questions and hang with us! You’re an inspiration to ME to remain authentic and have fun with our “job” of being a photographer!

Those of you whose questions Kari picked to answer, email me at info@phaunt.com and I’ll send you your gift certificate!
